SMART is Sports Massage & Rehabilitation Therapy which encompasses several techniques designed for the three aspects of an athletic training regimen: pre-event, post-event & maintenance. Most athletic activity involves the repetitive use of certain muscle groups that can result in muscle imbalance and compensatory patterns. Sport massage prepares the body for physical activity, helps prevent injuries, and keeps it in optimal condition. The following is a brief synopsis of some of the types of work that is encompassed in your session.
- Pre-event - prepares the body for activity by warming up and stretching soft tissue. This increases flexibility & range of motion by enhancing performance & aiding in injury prevention.
- Post event - assists in removal of metabolic buildup helping to alleviate muscle tension, soreness, cramping & reduces recovery time.
- Maintenance - focuses on strained and fatigued muscles from over-exertion. Specifically designed massage promotes flexibility, resets nerve signals to muscles, alleviating possible structural imbalances & compensation and increases nutrient-rich blood flow necessary for healthy muscle tone. Incorporating sports massage to your routine minimizes recovery time between workouts allowing for more training sessions, enhancing physical performance.
Modalities & Techniques:
Therapeutic massage is the use of several deeper techniques for when more than one soft tissue issue is being address in the same session. Can consist of but not limited to Deep Tissue, Connective Tissue Release, Myofascial Release, Trigger Point therapy and Sports massage.....
Deep Tissue Massage - releases chronic patterns of tension points in muscle tissue, tendons or fascia using medium to heavier pressure on contracted areas.
Connective Tissue (Fascia) Release - is a form of intense, deep application that assists in releasing fascia restrictions. Fascia, a form of connective tissue, is a continuous, thin sheath that surrounds and provides structural support and protection for muscles, bones, nerves & organs. Restricted fascia can decrease flexibility and range of movement and create muscle compensation & weakness. The pressure applied by the therapist can be more intense and massage oil or lotion is not typically used. CTR helps alleviate chronic muscle tension and increases range of motion by restoring the length & flexibility of the fascia.
Myofascial Release - frees adhesive bonds between fascia, muscles, tendons & bones. The fascia is manipulated, directly or indirectly, which allows the connective tissue fibers to reorganize themselves in a more flexible, functional fashion. Assists in eliminating pain, increases range of motion & integrates structural balance.
ActiveRelease and (PNF) Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation Techniques ….isolating one or more muscle tissues, groups and firing the muscles to lengthen the muscle tissues
Grasto/Gua-Sha - instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization that enables clinicians to effectively break down scar tissue and fascial restrictions. The technique utilizes specially designed stainless steel instruments to specifically detect and effectively treat areas exhibiting soft tissue fibrosis or chronic inflammation.
G-5 therapy - electro-mechanical massage and percussion
Kinesio-Taping - places tape on top of and around muscle groups. Kinesio tape can be used before, during and after activities, and worn for up to three days without harming the skin
